Information on data processing during the exhibition “Back in 1410”
Graz Children’s Museum FRida & freD has been an important extracurricular place of learning for 20 years. The topic of this year’s exhibition is MEDIA SKILLS.
Children will be trained in interacting with digital media and learn about the critical usage and design of digital media. Topics are the interaction with smartphones, Internet, online games and social media, etc.
To make that possible, the children experience the exhibition as a Middle Ages computer game. They log into the individual stations with a personal QR code. In several areas of the exhibition they can take photos and videos of themselves. That is important to show the children the impact of publishing personal details in the protected area of our exhibition; that is why these photos and videos are visible in the exhibition.
After visiting the exhibition, children can log into a website using their personal code and see these photos and videos there. They will also find out how many points they have collected, how much time they spent in the individual areas, which areas they visited more frequently and which routes they took within the exhibition.
There is no further processing of the data other than for these purposes. The only personal details that are processed are
- first name (or a fictional game name)
- age (not the date of birth)
- photos
- videos
- location of the child within the 350 m² of exhibition space (which exhibition topic has the child spent time on and for how long)
Research is also being done on the exhibition. The goal of the research project is to further develop the media world’s understanding of children. This will support children in developing their media competence and the self-determined and safe interaction with media that is based on it.
The research project is being headed up by Prof. Dr. Christian Swertz (christian.swertz@univie.ac.at). He is professor for Media Education at the Department of Education at the University of Vienna.
Only anonymised data of the children will be provided to his research team. Anonymised means: The names of the children are not visible to the research team. If the children have taken photos or videos, these cannot be seen. The anonymisation thus ensures that no conclusions can be drawn regarding the identity of the children.
Regarding the legitimate interest of KIMUS Kindermuseum Graz GmbH:
KIMUS Kindermuseum Graz GmbH processes the children’s data on the basis of its legitimate interest pursuant to Art. 6 Para. 1 Letter f GDPR in order to offer the children an ideal exhibition experience and the learning opportunities that this brings.
The processing of the children’s personal details (first name, age, image and video data) is necessary as the exhibition aims to illustrate to the children in a practice-oriented manner the consequences of giving other people and organisations their personal details. Without these data, it would not be possible to hold the exhibition, which is a fundamental basis for teaching children about media skills.
The fundamental rights of artistic freedom, academic freedom and freedom of opinion as well as the public interest in promoting media skills outweigh the associated encroachment into personal details that is unavoidable in the context of the exhibition. At all times, the processing is done in a clearly defined and protected framework.
The personal details will be available for 2 months for educational follow-up and will then be anonymised.
We would like to point out to you that every child can visit the exhibition without disclosing any personal details. In this case, however, the visit is only possible with restrictions and the full educational purpose and learning experience cannot be guaranteed. In this case, each child will receive an individual code that makes it possible to use the game without personal details being processed or saved. In this mode, there is no possibility to create photos or videos or to collect play money. The child does not receive any feedback on his or her personal media skills either.
